Academic Approach

At Munich International School we organise our students’ learning around the three sections of the 

School: Junior School, Middle School and Senior School. These three learning environments provide an evolving physical and pedagogical context, best suited to the developing learning needs of our students.

Munich International School is the exemplar of excellence in the area of Approaches to Learning (ATL), as recently featured in a video on the International Baccalaureate Organization’s (IBO) website.
 
In their recent ‘ATL Progression of Learning’ video, educators from Munich International School speak about their work supporting students to become powerful and self-directed learners.
 
Significant research into the science of learning suggests that one of the most important ways that schools assist in creating independent, life-long learners is through explicitly teaching learning skills.
 
The MIS Academic Council is focusing its efforts on supporting teachers in all three of our schools (Junior, Middle and Senior) to implement practices that help students become aware of and intentionally improve their approaches to learning skills.

JUNIOR SCHOOL

Junior School

The Junior School serves students from a variety of backgrounds, experiences and cultures. We are committed to supporting each child’s social, emotional and intellectual development. The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP) is designed to inspire students to become inter-culturally aware and achieve their potential within a stimulating and caring learning environment. Our programme strives to develop students who are international citizens, as well as independent, life-long learners. The attributes of the International Baccalaureate Learner Profile describe some of the ideal characteristics of a life-long learner. It is central to the PYP’s definition of what it means to be internationally minded.
 
At the heart of the Primary Years Programme’s philosophy is a commitment to structured inquiry as the leading vehicle for learning. Students are encouraged to explore, experiment, wonder, inquire, practise, invent, create, imagine and play. We want all our learners to be actively engaged and involved fully with a hands-on approach to all learning experiences.
 
Six transdisciplinary themes provide the framework for the exploration of subject areas in ways that transcend their conventional subject boundaries. Within this transdisciplinary framework, Munich International School has developed individual subject standards and benchmarks to be incorporated both within the Programme of Inquiry and as standalone units of inquiry.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

The middle years of schooling is a time of rapid growth in a young person’s life, involving complex and irregular physiological and emotional change. At Munich International School (MIS) we have an experienced team of professionals providing a structured and caring environment for students as they transition from the primarily  “one classroom” learning environment of the Junior School to the varied demands and structures of the Senior School.

To make this journey easier, the Middle School building was designed to accommodate Grade 5. Traditionally the final year of the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP), Grade 5 at MIS has become the Middle Years Programme (MYP) transition year. Students are still, as in the Junior School, largely taught in a homeroom setting, but are also gradually introduced to the MYP.

The MYP is a framework of academic challenge that encourages students to embrace and understand connections between the subject content and the real world while developing critical and reflective thinking skills. The programme consists of eight subject groups integrated through five areas of interaction. The Learner Profile is a central tenet of the programme and is based on ten qualities, which develop the whole student physically, emotionally, intellectually, emotionally and ethically.


The purpose of the Senior School is to provide an environment of mutual respect and co-operation in order for students to achieve the transition from adolescence to adulthood. We are aware that for many students the Senior School provides the final years of schooling.

SENIOR SCHOOL

Our programme, though primarily academic, offers a wide range of opportunities for creativity, sport and service to the community. Within this context students of varying abilities and aptitudes will be encouraged to develop to the full their intellectual, social, moral, physical, creative, emotional and individual potential.

Following guidance at the end of grade 10, students will decide which three higher level subjects they wish to study for the IB Diploma Programme. They will then choose three standard level subjects.

Within the IB Diploma Programme each student must take at least one modern language and mathematics as one of their six subject choices, they also write an extended essay in one subject area, and participate in CAS, (Creativity, Activity, Service). Students also study Theory of Knowledge (TOK), which underpins the breadth of the IB Programme.
