Future-Ready
Makers' Laboratory

In 2018, Munich International School (MIS) has opened a new 500 square meter Makers’ and Innovation Laboratory, the largest and most well-equipped innovation lab of any school in Bavaria, with specialised studios for computing, for materials science, for bicycle and small appliance repair, for textiles & fashion design and for video & sound production.

“Innovative curriculum and learning space design are at the heart of our Strategic Plan in order to make MIS ‘future-ready”

– Axel Krein, Chair of the Board

The new teaching and learning space was officially opened by Board Chair, Axel Krein, on Wednesday 19 September 2018, the 52th Anniversary of Munich International School and 50 years since MIS' move to the magnificent Buchhof site in Starnberg.

This new facility enhances the School's ability to integrate Making and Innovation into the curriculum at all levels of the School with real-world skills, such as:

  • Coding and Computing
  • Design Thinking
  • Video and Sound Production
  • 3D-Printing and Proto-typing
  • Materials Science
  • Fashion and Fabrics Design

"Both in the world of work and in the wider society, our students will face challenges as adults that we cannot yet anticipate. We are making MIS a school that equips students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to master complex challenges and to thrive in a world of accelerating change." – Timothy Thomas, Head of School

“Innovative curriculum and learning space design are at the heart of our Strategic Plan in order to make MIS ‘future-ready’”, explained Axel Krein, Chair of the MIS Board of Directors and Chair of the Committee that oversaw the creation of the School’s new Strategic Plan. The Board seeks to empower its outstanding faculty with tools to enable future-oriented pedagogy and learning.

School Director, Timothy Thomas, is leading the implementation of the new facilities: "Both in the world of work and in the wider society, our students will face challenges as adults that we cannot yet anticipate. We are making MIS a school that equips students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes to master complex challenges and to thrive in a world of accelerating change."

Munich International School was founded in Harlaching in the Munich city centre in 1966 and moved to its current site in Starnberg in September 1968.
