Student-Athlete Academic Eligibility Policy

In addition to participating in trips that are a required part of the academic curriculum, students may normally miss up to 10 days per school year to participate in school-organised competitions, tournaments, athletics events, arts and other trips.

This is provided they:
  • maintain an achievement grade of at least 4 (satisfactory)
  • maintain an effort of at least A (acceptable)
  • demonstrate their commitment to their academic work by completing the ‘Notification of Student Absence’ form and handing to the Senior School Office at the latest by 14:00 on the day prior to the trip

The Athletic Office will advise the MS/SrS office of all student-athletes and expected dates of absence at the beginning of each season. The final list of students to be absent will be sent to teachers shortly before each event, as soon as the traveling team has been established.

Because of travel arrangements and payments that must be made, teachers shouldraise concerns about a student’s expected absences as early as possible. Teachers should contact the Athletic Director with their concern or objection. The Athletic Director will work with the teacher, student, and coach to either find an agreeable arrangement or take the student off the list of participants. Whether only one or several teachers raise concern over a student, the student may be deemed ineligible to participate.

Students on academic probation are not permitted to participate in sports teams,
either in practices or in games.
When selection to a team has been made, usually within the first week of the activity,
a student is expected to make a wholehearted commitment to the team and all season
dates. The fact that a student occupies a selected position means that another student
has probably been deprived of the position and will not experience the opportunities
that go with it. Selection therefore entails an important responsibility. The student
is expected to attend all the trainings required, as well as all games and tournaments,
unless sick or injured. Failure to meet expectations may result in a student being
dropped from the team.
