Philosophy of MIS Athletics

The role of athletics in a school setting goes far beyond the playing of games. The challenges of athletic competition complement the rigors of academics and encourage athletes to grow intellectually, socially, and physically. The MIS Athletic Department strives to provide a variety of opportunities to a large number of students, developing skills and sportsmanship while striving for excellence and fostering friendships.

Overview

The Athletic Department offers competitive team sports after school primarily for grades 6 to 12.
Teams include soccer, volleyball, basketball, track & field, skiing, tennis, cross-country, swimming, rugby and softball, whereas league soccer and the ski team are already open to grade 4 and 5.
Several sports fields, tennis courts, a fitness room and a well-equipped triple gymnasium on campus are available for trainings and competition. The teams travel to other international schools within Europe for weekend exchanges as well as for large championships like ISST (International Schools Sports Tournament) and SCIS (Sports Council of International Schools). Certain teams participate weekly in local league games under the auspices of a school-sponsored sports club (Sportverein).

Shortly before the start of each season, students receive information in their homeroom regarding the teams, training days, games, championships etc ... . They will have to participate in tryouts the first week of each season and then sign up online for their team.

Definitions

The Athletic Department is one of three distinct sports bodies within MIS. Please note the following:

The Athletic Department is responsible for competitive interscholastic and local league teams at MIS. Our office is located on the ground floor of the gym building.

The Sportverein is the entity that supports the Athletic Department through fundraising and organizing volunteer help as a type of Booster Club. The Sportverein also organizes recreational activities for adults like Badminton or Soccer.

The Physical Education Department is a separate department responsible for teaching PE classes, a required school course. The PE department also organizes special events like the Sports Days, which are not related to the Athletic Department. The PE teachers’ office is in the basement of the gym building.
