Senior School Guidance & Counselling

ethics

Ethics in the Senior School is delivered by the Year Advisors, the Counsellors, and the Assistant Principal, who meet with students in groups and as individuals. The Year Advisors meet every morning during homeroom with groups of 16 to 18 students for administrative purposes. There is one extended period scheduled for them to be with their students each week. The Personal, Health, and Social Education program is based on MIS’ Educational Values and Goals, the IB Learner Profile, the MYP Areas of Interaction, and the developmental needs of students in each grade. The Year Advisors, Counsellors and Assistant Principal collaborate in the planning and implementation of the program.

Special sessions are offered to parents throughout the year to maintain effective communication within the MIS community. Topics include an introduction to international transitions, explanation of different educational programmes, and information about the university application process. (Detailed university guidance information can be found in The MIS Curriculum for Grades 11/12 document [section 7], available on the MIS website.)

Preparation for university begins straight away as students develop and refine their study skills and improve their academic learning. Through their courses and Ethics/Year Advisor sessions, students learn to work in groups, manage their time outside of class, structure projects into achievable deadlines, and design goals for their future.

All three Senior School Counselors are available to help students determine their plans beyond MIS, including career exploration and course selection. While the 9/10 Counselor focuses on career education and opportunities, the two 11/12 Counselors assist students with university admissions. Family Connection is an online program that serves as the counselors’ main communication tool with all students and parents about future plans.

Each autumn, as university advisors, the 11/12 Counselors work extensively on university applications with Grade 12 students. During second semester, they assist Grade 11 students with refining their goals. Most MIS students apply to universities throughout Europe, primarily the UK and Germany, and within the United States. Counselors also help students prepare specific plans for taking a gap year between finishing at MIS and attending university.

The EU University Advisor assists students in applying to universities throughout Europe including Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and the UK, among many others. The North American University Advisor works with students on applications to universities in the US and Canada, as well as American universities in Europe.* Either university advisor can help students interested in attending university outside Europe or the US. Students (and parents) are encouraged to meet regularly with the appropriate university advisor about admissions processes, necessary requirements, and important deadlines.

*It should be noted that US university admissions, in particular, are more holistic and complex than European schools. It is, therefore, useful to meet with the North American university advisor early to fully understand the process.

Discipline Statement

It is expected that students, when asked about discipline, will respond in an honest and forthright manner. Should a serious breach of community standards occur following the submission of applications, MIS will encourage the student to contact his or her universities. If the school discovers that a student has not contacted a university, or has not addressed a disciplinary matter honestly and in a forthright manner, MIS will contact the university directly.
