Diploma Programme (DP)

The IB Diploma Programme at MIS challenges students to reach high with their academic goals. Our students aim for and enter some of the best Universities in the world- Yale, Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge, London School of Economics and many others.

Studying the 6 subjects, 3 at Higher Level with depth and breadth as well as 3 at Standard Level with less depth and breadth, allows students to focus on direct academic directions and still have a broad and balanced education to face the future. All of our courses are IB Diploma level whether or not the students face the IB exams after 2 years of study.

Student support for the Extended Essay, TOK essay is aimed at allowing the students to take on the responsibility of independent research and academic work in order to succeed in universities.

Extended Essay

IB Diploma candidates are required to undertake original research and write an essay of some 4000 words. This aspect of the programme offers the opportunity to investigate a topic of special interest and to become acquainted with the kind of independent research and writing skills expected at the university level. A total of about 40 hours of private study and writing time is recommended. A student may choose to write an essay in any IB subject that the school can adequately supervise but preferably in one of the student’s own subjects.

An extended essay in a subject from group 1 must be a literature based essay while a group 2 essay may be written either as a language essay or as a literature essay. Native and non native speakers alike are entitled to submit extended essays in language or literature but they must be written in the language for which they are registered. For example, a native English speaker registering an extended essay in Spanish language and culture must write the paper in Spanish.

Extended essays submitted in the other four academic areas of the curriculum must be registered in one of the official subjects of the Diploma programme. These essays must be written in one of the IBO languages- English, French or Spanish, but typically in the language of the school. Selection of the extended essay subject gives students the chance to deepen their programme of study, for example by researching and writing on a topic in one of their higher level courses. Interdisciplinary themes are not accepted for the extended essay.

Creativity, Action, Service

Creativity, Action, Service is known by its acronym CAS and is a fundamental part of the diploma experience. The CAS requirement takes seriously the importance of life outside the world of scholarship, providing a refreshing counterbalance to the academic self-absorption some may feel within a demanding school environment. The IB goal of educating the whole person and fostering a more compassionate and active citizenry comes alive in an immediate way when students reach beyond themselves and their books.

CAS involves three essential elements. Creativity is interpreted broadly to include a wide range of arts activities as well as the creativity students demonstrate in designing and implementing service projects. Action can include not only participation in individual and team sports but also taking part in expeditions and in local or international projects. Service encompasses a host of community and social service activities. Some examples include helping children with special needs, the Tanzania project at M.I.S., visiting hospitals and working with refugees or homeless people

All IB Diploma students are expected MIS Diploma students must also complete 150 hours of quality CAS activities during grades 11 and 12.

Our students compile amazing records of achievement in CAS through the Sports, the extracurricular and fine arts programs at MIS. Students are also active in their home communities.
