Life at MIS

Housing Information

When traveling on overnight trips to take part in various events (festivals, tournaments, concerts) MIS students are often housed by families of the host school. This is also expected from us when other schools visit MIS.

All MIS families are encouraged to house, but the families that have children participating in any Fine Art Activity are required to do so.

It is recommended that families host two or more visitors at a time since both parties are usually more at ease and independent in this situation. We will do our best to make housing as practical for host families as possible.

This school year from 25 to 29 of April 2012, MIS will host the AMIS Middle School Bands Festival. Your hospitality will be very much appreciated. For detailed info please contact: cvalesani@mis-munich.de.

After School Activities

Welcome to the After School Activities and Fine Arts Programme.

We are delighted to offer once again a wide range of activities that will enable students to develop their skills, discover new talents and make new friends. Students are encouraged to participate in clubs, where learning to work with others and a sense of responsibility and commitment is developed. These clubs not only offer our students a flavor of their chosen activity but give them also the opportunity to extend and support their class work in music, drama, art, sport and debating. As the students develop their skills and maybe decide to specialize in a particular area, perhaps wishing to eventually gain qualifications should than be looking at more formal class in a specialized school.

Senior School Students who are following arts courses are advised to participate in the bands, choirs, drama and art clubs in order to gain extra experience especially in the performing arts subjects. Numerous events give the students the opportunity to do so throughout the year: school performances, festival and tournaments onsite and outside the school. We have on campus a superbly equipped theatre, a small black room for little productions and two auditoriums where performers are given every opportunity to shine. The students learn to prepare, practice and present their works with a positive and professional attitude.

Thanks to the MIS membership with ISTA (International School Theater Association), AMIS (Association for Music in International School) and NESDA (New European Speech and Debate Association) some talented students can every year participate in Festivals hosted by MIS or other International Schools.

To optimize the use of our facilities and to give the students the opportunity to experience as many as possible activities, our program runs in three different sessions: fall, winter and spring. Some clubs run through the three sessions, some others only for one or two. There will be a different schedule for each session and a new application has to be submitted.

The Junior School after school classes start at 15:15 and finish at 16:15; cooking finishes at 17:15. Middle and Senior School classes start at 16:15 and finish at 17:45.

Outdoor activities like soccer and tennis will not run during the winter season. During the Fall and Spring seasons some practices might be cancelled on short notice due to bad weather conditions.

Please note that swimming and climbing take place at external locations.

In order to improve our program, any suggestion is welcome. Don’t hesitate to contact us!

Most of the activities meet once a week for ten weeks in three sessions. To allow a better transition from one session to the other, the clubs don’t meet for two weeks in between. During these two weeks of pause the registration for the next session has to be done. The Junior School Choir, the World Choir, the Bands and Voice & Body ensembles run all year and have extra rehearsals during the productions and concerts times.

The application for the first session has to be submitted by August 24, 2011.

We aim to accommodate all students in at least one activity but please note that classes are limited in size.

The number of sports activities offered to JS students is currently restricted, due to limited access to our sports facilities which are being used for curriculum PE purpose at this time.

In addition, from 4 pm every afternoon, our wide ranging Athletic Programme currently makes use of the sports halls.

Allocation Procedure

  •  All applications received before the due date will be considered. Early applications will not be given priority.
  •  If an activity is oversubscribed, we will review previous sessions and give priority to those who have not yet been able to participate or who have participated in fewer activities.
  •  After a student is placed in an activity, priority then goes to placing other children before that same child is placed in second or third activity.
  •  Students may not rank their choices.
  •  A student’s participation must be positive and constructive, otherwise their place in an activity may be offered to another student on the waiting list.
  •  Students who are absent for two weeks without excuse notes may lose their space in an activity.
  •  Students may join no more than three activities.
  •  NEW FOR THIS SEASON - A confirmation letter notifying you in which activity each student can participate will be available on the Eportal page of each student at the end of the application and registration process.

PLEASE NOTE:

  1. on the first week of activities, all Junior School students will meet their club leaders or coaches at the main entrance of the Junior school. In order to participate in an After school Activity students in EC classes MUST be met by a parent and escorted to their After School Activity meeting point and assisted with any necessary clothing change. This could be organized on a rotational basis amongst parents. JS swimmers meet the coach every Tuesday at 3:15 pm in cafeteria.
  2. students may not stay on campus unsupervised while waiting for the start of their after school activity or for their siblings who are taking an after school activity. If you are not going to be late to pick up your child/ren on time, please call the After School Activities office (08151-366107) as soon as possible. We will collect the children at the end of the activity and supervise them.

Insurance

In case of an accident happened while attending the After School Activities, the school nurse has to be informed as soon as possible. She will provide help with the paperwork needed for the school insurance and your private one.

Cancellation Policy

When fewer than 10 participants register for an activity, the program coordinator may cancel the club for the term.

If a class has to be cancelled ahead of time, we will send an email to the parents. For unforeseen cancellations due to illness of the teacher, emergency or bad weather conditions, we will contact the parents so that arrangements can be made. In case of pure weather condition, please keep checking the front page of the MIS web site for the latest update regarding classes’ cancellation and students’ dismissal.

Transportation after the After School Activities

Students have to be collected promptly at the end of each activity. Students are NOT allowed to wait in the car park. If a club is cancelled for any reason the children can go home on the regular afternoon bus only with the parent’s permission.

As an extra service for students attending After School Activities MIS provides Late Activity Buses (LABs) for Junior School students leaving MIS at 16:30 and for Middle and Senior School students at 18:05. The use of these buses is free of charge for all MIS students. For security and safety reasons, every student using the LABs must register in order to use them. Registration forms are available at the Transportation Office, After School Activities Office and online through this link.

Since this is an extra service based on the number of students enrolled in After School Activities, any route may be changed or the run may be cancelled at short notice. On the Late Buses there are no bus monitors. According to the numbers of passengers using the LABs, either coaches or minibuses may serve the bus routes.

If you have any queries please call the Transportation Office: 08151-366150.

INSTRUMENTAL TEACHING / TUITION

Instrumental Tuition is offered on a large variety of instruments as part of the After School Fine Arts Activities Program. Lessons are available either before school, during lunch, after school or during music lessons with the permission of the music teacher.
Most lessons take place in the instrumental teaching rooms in the Middle School basement.
Students in Grades 11 and 12 who participate in the performing arts clubs and take instrumental lessons, are able to use these hours towards their community service requirement for the IB Diploma.
Further information regarding the program is available from the coordinator Mrs. Lee Betts or from the music teachers.

IB DIPLOMA MUSIC COURSE - GROUP PERFORMANCE

The IB Diploma Music course now offers a Group Performance option for students at standard level. Therefore, students are able to use their participation in the band, orchestra, choir or other ensembles and groups to fulfill the requirements of the performance section of the course (50% of the grade). If you would like more information about this course, please contact the Instrumental Program Coordinator Mrs. Lee Betts.

PRIVATE LESSONS (Information)

One of the most effective ways of teaching music has been through private lessons. It offers immediate evaluation and assessment between teacher and student. This process offers one of the most beneficial ways of significant musical development.

We feel that we have a remarkable availability of highly qualified private music teachers at Munich International School. Private lessons for Violin, Classical, Rock and Jazz Guitar, Flute, Clarinet, Recorder, Saxophone, Trumpet, Tuba, Trombone, Cello, Percussion, Drums, Harp, and voice can be taken on the school premises.

Please consider the following information for a beneficial participation in the instrumental program:
  • Commitment: your teachers are dedicated musicians who have committed their time to help you attain your ultimate music potential. Likewise, it is important to understand that a sense of commitment is necessary in order to make this a positive musical endeavor.
  • Scheduling can be difficult. Although most students would prefer to be scheduled right after school hours, sometimes this is not possible. Every effort is made to try to accommodate everyone´s schedule, but some flexibility is necessary. Some lessons have to be scheduled before or after school hours, during lunch time or music lessons.
  • Cancellation of lessons must be kept to a minimum. Your teacher will inform you of his/her cancellation policy. In the event you must cancel a lesson, please call your individual teacher directly. If you need help with “last minute cancellation or arrangements” call the fine arts office at +49(0)8151-366107. Sometimes the private teacher is not aware of holidays or extra-curricular activities that are part of the school year. Therefore, it is important that you inform your teacher whenever you cannot make a lesson.
  • Cost of lessons is arranged directly with the instrumental teacher. Each teacher will advise you on his/her specific methods of payment.
  • Instrumental Hire: A number of instruments are available for hire by the term for 60 Euro. Currently Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Guitar and Saxophone can be hired from MIS.
For further information please contact your individual teacher or the After School Fine Arts Activities Office. activities@mis-munich.de
