After School Activities

Welcome to the After School Activities Enrichment Programmes for:

  • Performing Arts
  • Fine Arts & Clubs
  • Non-Competitive Sports

We are delighted to offer all of our students a diverse assortment of activities that inspire our participants to develop new skills, discover and nurture individual interests and talents, and to broaden and share intercultural perspectives while fostering new social networks and friendships.

Our After School Activities encourage our students to explore and ‘taste the flavor’ of their chosen program(s) while giving our participants an enriching supplement to their class work in performing arts, fine arts, technology, strategic thinking, and sports. Students can learn new skills that generate a motivated interest towards what they ultimately pursue and /or specialize in for their future.

Performing Arts

Those who are interested in the Performing Arts may broaden their focus with a variety of instrumental, choir, dance, drama, and theatre programs. Our numerous performances hosted here at MIS coupled withchoir camps, events, and festivals held on off-campus venues, enhance our After School Performing Arts programs with a plethora of opportunities for our students. Our superbly equipped theater, a black room for small productions, a well-appointed film room, blue room, and two auditoriums prepare and accommodate our performers with opportunities to shine. The students learn to create, develop, practice and present their works with a positive and professional attitude.

MIS is a member of: ISTA (International School Theater Association), AMIS (Association for Music in International School) and NESDA (New European Speech and Debate Association); outstanding organizations that offer a variety of educational opportunities and experiences for dedicated students to participate and grow.

Fine Arts and Clubs

Students can direct their creative passion, eye for detail, and flare for design into our Fine Arts and Clubs that offer arts & crafts, ceramics, cooking, technology, and photography. Our Chess Club offers our Junior School students another avenue to exercise and develop cognitive skills while expanding their strategic thinking abilities; MIS is also a member of NESDA (New European Speech and Debate Association). Our fine arts and clubs are intended to provide hands-on experience while nurturing sometimes undiscovered talents, new skills, and multi-dimensional cogitation.

Non-Competitive Sports

The role of our Non-Competitive Sports activities is to give students the opportunity to try a variety of sports in a welcoming and motivating atmosphere. The programs focus on individual development and growth, while cultivating the concept of good sportsmanship and team play. This is a great venue to learn proper skills and techniques that can be used for a lifetime in recreational play or taken to new levels of competitive performance.

Important Dates

The colorful array of enrichment opportunities that are offered by our After School Activities, meet once a week for ten weeks in three seasonal sessions. Some of our programs are designed to progress across all three seasons while others are offered for one or two sessions. There is a two week break between each session and during this interlude, registration and class enrollment are processed. Programs offered will vary for fall, winter, and spring to provide seasonal changes for weather conditions, annual exhibits, performances, etc. Please note that new applications must be submitted for each session, unless specified on the online activity description.

The Choirs, the Bands, Strings and Orchestra, Climbing, Mandarin, and Taekwon Do are ‘all year’programs with extra rehearsals during the music productions and concerts, and special testing and exhibitions for martial arts promotion.

Our Junior School ASA programs are usually scheduled from 15:15 - 16:15; Monday - Thursday. Middle and Senior School ASA classes are generally held from Monday - Friday, from 16:15 to 17:45. Activities that are conducted off campus often require a different time range. The application for the first session must be submitted by August 23, 2012.

Applications

Registration must be completed online.  If you experience technical problems, send an email to: activities@mis-munich.de.

Our goal is to continue accommodating all students in at least one activity, however, please note that classes are limited in size.

Allocation Procedure

  • All applications received before the due date will be considered. Please note that early applications will not be given priority.
  • If an activity is oversubscribed, we will review previous sessions within the school year, and give priority to either those who have not yethad the opportunity to participate or who have participated in fewer activities.
  • After a student is placed in an activity, priority then goes to placing other children before that same child is placed in a second or third activity. *Please note that students may join a maximum of three activities to cooperatively provide an opportunity for others to also enjoy at least more than one of their chosen programs; this is contingent on space availability.
  • Students may not rank their choices.
  • We look forward to our participating students to come to their ASA with a positive and constructive attitude.  Disrespectful behavior will not be accepted and may result in giving that student’s spot in the class to another student on the waiting list.
  • Students who are absent for two weeks without a considerable excuse may lose their space in an activity so that a wait listed student can have an opportunity.

A confirmation letter notifying you in which activity each student can participate will be sent home to each student at the end of the application and registration process.

IMPORTANT - PLEASE NOTE

Junior School Students:  On the first week of activities, all JS students will meet their club leaders or coaches at the main entrance of the Junior school.

EC Students: In order to participate in an After school Activity students in EC classes MUST be met by a parent and escorted to their After School Activity meeting point and assisted with any necessary clothing change. This could be organized on a rotational basis amongst parents.

JS Swimmers:The Coach will meet with the  JS swimmers every Tuesday at 3:15 pm in cafeteria.

Note: EC & Junior Students must not stay on campus unsupervised. If you are going to be late to pick up your child/ren, please call the After School Activities office (08151-366-107) as soon as possible so that arrangements can be made.

Insurance

In case of an accident occurring while participating in an After School Activity, the school nurse must be informed as soon as possible. She will provide help with the paperwork needed for the school insurance and your private one.

Cancellation Policy

When fewer than 10 participants register for an activity, the program coordinator may cancel that program for the term.

If a class has to be cancelled ahead of time, we will send an email to the parents. For unforeseen cancellations due to illness of the teacher or an emergency condition, we will contact the parents so that alternative arrangements can be made.  Please note:  alternative indoor activities will take place when poor weather conditions prohibit outdoor activities from occurring; an activity will only be cancelled if severe weather conditions render high enough risk to evacuate the school premises - please keep checking the front page of the MIS web site for the latest update regarding the cancellation of After School Activities and student dismissal.

INSTRUMENTAL TEACHING / TUITION

Instrumental Tuition is offered on a large variety of instruments as part of the After School Fine Arts Activities Program. Lessons are available either before school, during lunch, after school or during music lessons with the permission of the music teacher.

Most lessons take place in the instrumental teaching rooms in the Middle School basement. Students in Grades 11 and 12 who participate in the performing arts clubs and take instrumental lessons, are able to use these hours towards their community service requirement for the IB Diploma.
Further information regarding the program is available from the coordinator Mrs. Lee Betts or from the music teachers.

IB DIPLOMA MUSIC COURSE - GROUP PERFORMANCE

The IB Diploma Music course now offers a Group Performance option for students at standard level. Therefore, students are able to use their participation in the band, orchestra, choir or other ensembles and groups to fulfill the requirements of the performance section of the course (50% of the grade). If you would like more information about this course, please contact the Instrumental Program Coordinator Mrs. Lee Betts.

PRIVATE LESSONS (Information)

One of the most effective ways of teaching music has been through private lessons. It offers immediate evaluation and assessment between teacher and student. This process offers one of the most beneficial ways of significant musical development.

We feel that we have a remarkable availability of highly qualified private music teachers at Munich International School. Private lessons for Violin, Classical, Rock and Jazz Guitar, Flute, Clarinet, Recorder, Saxophone, Trumpet, Tuba, Trombone, Cello, Percussion, Drums, Harp, and voice can be taken on the school premises.
Please consider the following information for a beneficial participation in the instrumental program:
  • Commitment: your teachers are dedicated musicians who have committed their time to help you attain your ultimate music potential. Likewise, it is important to understand that a sense of commitment is necessary in order to make this a positive musical endeavor.
  • Scheduling can be difficult. Although most students would prefer to be scheduled right after school hours, sometimes this is not possible. Every effort is made to try to accommodate everyone´s schedule, but some flexibility is necessary. Some lessons have to be scheduled before or after school hours, during lunch time or music lessons.
  • Cancellation of lessons must be kept to a minimum. Your teacher will inform you of his/her cancellation policy. In the event you must cancel a lesson, please call your individual teacher directly. If you need help with “last minute cancellation or arrangements” call the fine arts office at +49(0)8151-366107. Sometimes the private teacher is not aware of holidays or extra-curricular activities that are part of the school year. Therefore, it is important that you inform your teacher whenever you cannot make a lesson.
  • Cost is arranged directly with the instrumental teacher. Each teacher will advise you on his/her specific methods of payment.
  • Instrumental Hire: A number of instruments are available for hire by the term for 60 Euro. Currently Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Guitar and Saxophone can be hired from MIS.
For general information, please contact Mrs. Lee Betts at lbetts@mis-munich.de.

To schedule instrumental lessons, please contact the individual teachers directly (details can be found in the documents below):

After School Activities offer all our students an opportunity to explore extra - curricular programs that will motivate them to discover and grow their own aptitudes and talents, through gained knowledge, personal growth, and shared intercultural perspectives.

Transportation after the After School Activities

MIS also provides Late Activity Buses (LAB) as an extra service for students attending After School Activities (ASA) and the Athletics programs.

Students who are not enrolled in these activities must obtain a Bus Pass from the ASA office, provided that adequate seating is available on the given bus. Bus passes must be requested by noon on the day of travel and can be picked up in the ASA office. Please mail requests to: Laura Meyer - LABS@mis-munich.de

The scheduled time of LAB departure from MIS is 18:05h. We primarily serve our major MIS communities or communities without easy access to public transportation as well as a number of U-Bahn and S-Bahn stations to enable passengers to make their way home.
Depending on the numbers of passengers using the LABs, either coaches or minibuses serve the bus routes. Routing of buses may change from school year to school year depending on demand. Students need to register for the Late Activity Bus when enrolling for the corresponding activities. Since this is an extra service based on the number of students enrolled in After School Activities, the route may need to be changed or cancelled at short notice.

A current LAB schedule can be obtained from the Transportation Office or After School Activities Office or Athletics Office.
These buses will not run on days with Parent- / Teacher Conferences, on “half days” and “early
dismissal days”.

Housing

When travelling on overnight trips to take part in various events (festivals, tournaments, concerts), MIS students are often housed by families of the host school. This is also expected from MIS families that have children participating in programmes that require travel as a reciprocal agreement between all participating and hosting schools.

It is recommended that families host two or more visitors at a time since both parties are usually more at ease when guests are not visiting as an independent. We always strive to provide host families and guests with as much convenience as possible.
