Grade 3 students, who recently joined MIS and were beginning to learn English, found purpose in building bird feeders. The students learned to work together to support local birds species on our campus and they improved their English at the same time.
The students were supported in working together to build two bird feeders. This included making a prototype in the JS Maker Space from cardboard and then designing the bird feeder to cut out on the laser cutter in the LADC Maker’s Lab. The parts were then assembled in the JS Maker Space.
The students learned about the type of birds in the area and kind of food required. A specialist was invited to MIS to help students identify the birds including bird calls.
