Munich International School: Inspiring & Realising Bold Dreams

Written by MIS Communications | Feb 4, 2026 9:58:51 AM

Munich International School (MIS) is a pioneering, full IB Pre-K - 12 school, set on a vast forested campus next to Lake Starnberg. MIS is on a mission to inspire, challenge, and empower our diverse community of learners to become engaged community members, culturally respectful contributors, resilient, adaptable individuals, and bold dreamers who shape their own future and turn their aspirations into reality. Our campus is a canvas and a playground for their dreams to unfold.

The MIS experience begins with a walk through the iconic "rainbow tunnel" entrance, which opens to a federally protected view of the Alps and the grand facade of a former castle built in 1875. This "campus wonderland" blends historic structures with futuristic facilities. Cobblestone paths weave through our 55-acre parkland campus to reveal garden classrooms guarded by hand-made scarecrows and walking trails lined with wildflowers. In the outdoor makers' space, younger students build teepees, forts, and animal habitats to tuck into the branches of birch trees and 500-year-old oaks. Soft morning light plays through the leaves and across five adventurous playgrounds. Our campus inspires a dream-like quality to life, but it is inside our buildings where students are truly equipped to achieve their boldest dreams.

A Pioneer in Educational Technology

Our pioneering spirit has kept MIS at the forefront of educational technology for decades. As early as 1980, the school was one of the first in Europe to incorporate computer science into its curriculum, and today it remains a leading Apple school with over 14 years of 1:1 device integration. Within our high-tech makers’ spaces and design labs, students have access to 3D design software and printers, laser-cutters, a robotic arm, and a plethora of high- and low-tech materials to turn conceptual ideas into reality. Our commitment to innovation culminates in the latest addition to our campus, a building we call the Learning NeXus. The Learning NeXus is a futuristic co-working space at the heart of our campus, modeled after the world’s most innovative companies. Students enjoy the flexibility to book their own learning and collaboration spaces and have access to immediate IT and librarian support.

Exceptional Outcomes and Global Mentors

Success at MIS is also defined by academic outcomes that consistently soar well-above global averages. Recognized as a top-ranked international school in Munich for academic performance, we consistently celebrate high IB Diploma pass rates, with students typically achieving scores that significantly outperform the world average. These results are achieved with the support of world-class educators and university guidance counselors recruited from more than two dozen countries, all dedicated to fostering individual pathways to success. Multiple members of our faculty and leadership are IB examiners and work with the IB to develop their worldwide curriculum standards. Through personalized learning plans, internships, and portfolios of success, these mentors ensure that every student is prepared to strategically navigate their own pathway to success and to thrive at selective universities worldwide.

A Global Village of Changemakers

Alongside academic achievement and exceptional opportunities to build STEAM skills, MIS welcomes students into a diverse community of learners and changemakers, representing over 60 nations. MIS is a "global village" where diversity is not just a statistic but a core component of our identity and a source of strength. Our curriculum is intentionally inclusive and representative of global perspectives, teaching our students to honor and learn from their own life experiences, identities, and cultures as well as their peers'.

In this environment, students are empowered to be changemakers from an early age. Whether it is our Junior School students who launched a "Reading Buddies" club to support their younger peers or the Middle Schoolers' Think Tank class, which empowers and equips students with the methodology and task of improving our school and local community, or the Senior School students who founded an anti-bias group to ensure that all MIS students are treated with respect and dignity. At MIS, students are given the agency and ecosystem to nurture our community, to pursue what inspires them, and to realize their boldest dreams.
