Each year we run a Ski Team which trains together for five weekends and enters three Ski Races against other international schools. The 2024/25 edition of the Ski Team will shortly be open for families to request places on SchoolsBuddy. The Ski Team is open to children in Grades 5 to 12 with significant ski racing experience and proficiency, along with insurance and all necessary equipment.
This year, as last year, our ski training and race coaching will be provided by Austria Racing Camps who are our professional partner. For five weekends between November and March, our Ski Team travels by bus from the MIS parking lot on Early Release Fridays along with two MIS staff Ski Team Assistants, and arrives in the St. Sigismund/Kühtai area of Austria in the evening to dinner and a Coaches' meeting in the hotel. On Saturday and Sunday the team is out on the slopes with ARC, training for Slalom and Giant Slalom racing. The team then arrives by bus at the MIS parking lot at around 18:30 on the Sunday evening.
Students from the team are then selected to enter three race weekends where we compete against international schools who mostly travel from around Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The races usually include Slalom, Giant Slalom and Super G events and are heavily reliant on Ski Team parent volunteers to enable them to run. Last year the vast majority of students on the team were eligible to enter all 3 races and we saw some impressive success, placing 2nd overall in our first race of the season in Austria and 3rd overall in the very competitive EISSR race in Switzerland.
The third and final of these races is our very own Heinrich Harrer Cup, a race hosted by MIS which will see its 50th year in March 2026! This race is held in Seefeld in Tirol, Austria, and is a flagship event for our MIS community. All skiing parents of MIS, whether Ski Team parents or not, are welcome to join our Athletics team in Gatekeeping on the slopes during the race.
The 2024/25 Ski Team dates are:
Training 1: 15th to 17th November
Training 2: 29th November to 1st December
Training 3: 13th to 15th December
Race 1: 8th to 11th January (Hauser Kaibling race, Maria Alm, Austria - hosted by VIS)
Race 2: 22nd to 25th January (EISSR race, Wengen, Switzerland - see EISSR in Wengen )
Training 4: 7th to 9th February (not mandatory for Grade 12 ski team members)
Training 5: 7th to 9th March (not available to any ski team members competing in ISST teams)
Race 3: 13th to 15th March (Heinrich Harrer Cup, Seefeld, Austria - hosted by MIS)
The anticipated price for this year’s ski season is approx 6000 euros per athlete. This will include the following for each of the 8 school trips listed above: all bus travel, local travel between hotel and slopes where necessary, all accommodation, half-board meals on the majority of ski training/race days, full days of coaching and race support from ARC professional coaches at all training and race weekends, and costs associated to MIS staff Ski Team Assistants who travel with and take care of the athletes. The exact total price is highly dependent on the number of athletes who commit to the Ski Team, since fixed costs are to be divided between all athletes taking part. Extra costs and local purchases, such as the purchase of the TirolCard Lift Pass, other locally-required lift passes, and a small number of group team-building ‘meals out’ at local inexpensive pizza restaurants are not included.
