Heinrich Harrer

Born in Kärnten, Austria, Harrer's remarkable journey began as a student at the University of Graz, where he became the World Champion in downhill skiing in 1937. His adventurous spirit led him to be part of the historic team that successfully conquered the treacherous Eiger north wall in 1938.

The outbreak of World War II caught Harrer off guard while he was participating in the German Nanga Parbat expedition in India. Displaying incredible resilience, he managed to escape from an English prisoner of war camp and sought refuge in Tibet, where he forged a deep friendship with the Dalai Lama and became his mentor.

In 1951, Harrer returned to Austria, and his captivating memoir, "Seven Years in Tibet," captivated readers worldwide, being translated into 28 languages and selling over 2.5 million copies. Throughout his life, Harrer embarked on numerous expeditions, venturing into the Amazon, Alaska, Equatorial Africa, New Guinea, the Himalayas, and Borneo. In recognition of his extraordinary achievements, the President of Austria bestowed upon him the distinguished title of Professor of Anthropology in 1964.

The Heinrich Harrer Cup ski races were established in 1975, with two MIS students, Wolfgang Vollath and Martin Rose, alongside their teacher, Dan Glover, at the helm. The event was conceived in collaboration with Heinrich Harrer himself, who graciously accepted the role of patron, lending his name and legacy to this prestigious competition.

As we gather for the Heinrich Harrer Cup, let us remember the remarkable life and adventures of Heinrich Harrer, a true inspiration to all who seek to push boundaries and embrace the spirit of exploration.
