Dr. Kasket will make two presentations in the PAC, one for students in grades 8-11 during the school day, and one presentation for adults at 4.15pm on Tuesday, 11 February 2025. Parents and guardians of MIS students are warmly invited to attend the 4.15pm session in the PAC. Schools across the planet are reflecting on ways to support their students to have productive, healthy relationships to digital devices. Smart phones contain powerful tools that can be employed to support students in managing their time and enhancing their learning. But smart phones can also be a distraction and can be misused by students in ways that interfere with learning and with their social relationships. And most people agree that they don’t want young people indulging in too much screen time. What is a school to do?
Dr. Kasket has done extensive research into questions relevant to this topic. She is aware of some of the viral literature on the subject, and is also well-versed in more nuanced (and more valid) research studies. She isn’t a dogmatic proponent of any one particular approach to addressing this question. Instead she encourages an open-minded and skeptical look both into scientific research and into the data arising from one’s own context to understand what local measures make the most sense.
We look forward to an inspiring and thought-provoking presentation!
